Catherine Begin

Catherine is an active performer and Suzuki teacher hailing from Portland, Maine. Her love for music began when she heard the sound of a string quartet at a Christmas gathering. She was drawn to the deep, resonant sound and mellow sweetness of the cello. Catherine attended the Osher School of Music at the University of Southern Maine where she received a B.M. in cello performance. In her time as a student, Catherine studied under Boston Symphony member William Rounds and participated in several masterclasses, most notably with cellist Inbal Segev, cellist Yibing Chu and A Far Cry Orchestra.

Catherine has performed with various New England music groups such as The Portland Stage Theatre Company, The Raymond Arts Alliance and the Acadia Quartet. Currently she is a graduate assistant at Southern Illinois University where she is the principal cellist of the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra and co-director of the Southern Illinois Youth Orchestra. As a certified Suzuki teacher and proponent of mindfulness in music education Catherine seeks to provide a fun and inclusive learning space.
