(AGES FIVE AND UP)

Overview

Our bass instructors teach rock, blues, metal, country and classical styles on the electric bass. Beginners work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. Each lesson will challenge you with a new technique or music theory, and ends with something fun – such as your favorite riff or song. We employ a variety of bass method books based on student needs and preferences, and encourage students to bring smartphones or CDs to their lessons to learn their favorite tunes.

What’s the #1 reason to study bass at Market Street?

Our bass instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student's favorite type of music. Whether you're playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the bass after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.

What styles of bass do you teach?

We teach all styles, from rock, pop, jazz, and blues to metal, country, and classical – on electric bass.

What will I learn from bass lessons at the Conservatory?

Beginner bass students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson presents a new technical challenges or theory concept, and ends with something fun, such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of bass method books, and encourage students to bring their smartphone or CDs to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.

Do I need to purchase a bass to learn the instrument?

Students will need to purchase their own instrument for studying bass. If you currently are considering a bass purchase and need recommendations, our instructors are happy to help! You can email our instructor about recommendations anytime! We also do an inspection of your instrument at the first lesson (to check for tuning issues, or if the bass needs new strings, etc.) Depending on the age of the student, different bass sizes should be considered.

Mike Arnold

Bass with

Mike, a native of Marion, has had a deep love for music for as long as he can remember. He grew up listening to Country classics with his parents and Classic Rock with his older siblings. Their home was always filled with music. He took guitar lessons and a few drum lessons as a young boy but in 1987, at the age of 18, Mike fell in love with bass guitar.

Mike has no formal music education but has been a self taught student of electric bass for over 30 years. He has gleaned a wealth of knowledge and experience from working with many talented musicians over the years. While his bass playing roots are in Hard Rock and Metal, he has a deep respect and appreciation for all styles of music.

Mike is currently the bassist for the worship team at Second Baptist Church, Marion, where he has served since 2004. He has also done studio work with singer/songwriter Chuck Williamson on 2 albums that are available for streaming via Spotify or Apple Music.
